Your home’s gutters are easy to take for granted, but when they don’t perform their function properly, a lot can go wrong. Clogged, sagging, or broken gutters can damage your roof, walls, landscaping, and even your home’s foundation. If your gutters are giving any of the warning signs below, it’s time to get them maintained or repaired by a professional.
1. Visible Debris
If you see leaves, pine needles, dirt, or even new plant growth peeking out of your gutters, it’s time to clean them thoroughly. A debris pileup can do more than cause your gutters to stop working. If the debris traps water, instead of letting it drain, that standing water can attract a variety of pests and create the perfect place for mosquitoes to lay eggs!
2. Sagging Gutters
Sagging gutters are bad news. The next time a rainstorm comes, water may flow over or behind your gutter’s edge, causing soil erosion around your home and damaging its foundation. Gutters can sag for a few reasons. The first could be mediocre installation. Also, if your gutters are made of old aluminum, vinyl, or steel, they may have warped over time due to changes in outdoor temperature. However, the most common reason why sagging occurs is a substantial buildup of debris.
3. Stained or Damaged Siding
If the paint has started wearing away from your home’s siding, then there’s a good chance that water is flowing behind your gutters and down your home’s exterior walls. This also means that water could be pooling against your roof’s fascia whenever it rains. The fascia board runs along your roof’s lower edge and is fixed directly to the lower ends of the roof trusses (integral parts of a roof’s framework).
4. Water Pooling Against Your Home
A gutter system collects rainwater and also redirects it away from your home with strategically positioned downspouts. If any part of your gutters is clogged, warped, or cracked, you’ll probably see water collecting around your home’s foundation on a rainy day.
